Welcome to the Axminster Woodturners Club
The purpose of this website is to provide you with some basic information about the club - when and where we meet, what meetings are like, details about membership and other club activities. It's not meant to be a gallery of resources about woodturning, simply an introduction to the club. External links will open in a new window so please bear this in mind when using the back button. You can navigate within the website using the menu at the top. The Club is affiliated to the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (AWGB). and has its origins in Axminster at the original premises of what is now known as Axminster Tools & Machinery. We meet at the Woodbury Community Hall, just south of Axminster, usually on the first Saturday of the month. Most meetings are from 10 am to 1 pm, with the occasional session extended to about 4 pm. The meetings consist of a mixture of visiting and club woodturners demonstrating particular projects; we also hold hands-on practical sessions where several demonstrations are run simultaneously and members are able to have a go themselves. We try to provide a varied programme across the year to cater for various needs and interests, and some training as well. The club is now developing a mentoring system. A typical meeting starts at 10 am, with a break for refreshments at about 11.15. This provides a chance to see what others have been up to at the "Show and Tell" table and an opportunity to get advice about new ideas and techniques. As a club we're conscious that what's routine for some is quite new to others. Amidst the general socialising lots of advice is given along with tales of what nearly went very well.. and not so well. A great feature of the club is a high degree of mutual support along with an appreciation that the amount of time, energy and resources vary greatly across the membership. Our numbers vary but typically there are between 40 and 50 members. On average we have over 30 people at each meeting. The demonstrations are supported by AV equipment so everyone can get the most out of what's being shown and said. If you are thinking about joining our Woodturning Club please contact us or simply come along and see what goes on. Details of the costs involved are shown here. All new members are required to complete a Club application form as well as an AWGB form. If you are thinking about becoming a member, please have a look at the Membership page as well as Organisation & Documents where you will find the Club Constitution, policies on Safeguarding, Health & Safety and Information for New Members. We usually hold separate training sessions in the early months of the year to support less experienced members as well as to help experienced turners to develop new areas of expertise. The programme for this varies, subject to demand. |
